Does tenant insurance cover theft from my car?
Yes, in most cases. Your belongings are covered by off premises contents coverage even when they're stolen from your vehicle. Two limits to know: off premises theft is often capped at a percentage of your total contents limit, and your deductible still applies. Damage to the car itself, or to parts installed in it, falls under your auto insurance rather than your tenant policy.
How the limit works
Many policies cap off premises coverage at around 10% of your contents limit. For example, with $40,000 in contents coverage, items stolen from your car might be covered up to $4,000. Check your policy for the exact amount.
If something is stolen
- Report the theft to the police and keep the report number.
- Gather receipts or photos of the stolen items.
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible.
Some policies may require signs of forced entry. If you often carry laptops or other valuables, ask about extra coverage. Talk to a broker about your tenant insurance options.
